Wiping oneself to help the koalas and more… Wipe For Wildlife
Approx 6.7 Million Trees per year in Australia are chopped down in each year and flushed down the toilet!!
This isn’t a ‘Pete Ockleshaw original stat’ – I wouldn’t be so brazen to produce such a statement… This is in actual fact for a fantastic campaign that is run by the Melbourne Zoo called “Wipe for Wildlife”.
The campaign creates people’s awareness of how many trees make the toilet paper we use to wipe our bums and bits and then flush down the toilet. It also asks the question Is Your Bum Guilt Free? Meaning do you use recycled toilet paper to wipe your bums and bits????
Its one of those really easy fixes. We like them!!! In the future I will be introducing you to many of these easy fixes, or small changes you can do to make a big difference…
We’re not suggesting you use Recycled Toilet Paper, because thats just not cricket. Its asking us to use Toilet Paper that has been made from recycled paper… Look for Products with the FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) LOGO on them. This forest certification scheme is endorsed by Melbourne Zoo as is seen as the most robust, trusted and transparent there is.
Buyers Beware: There are plenty of products on our supermarket shelves with the logo PEFC (The Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification) however according some literature this has very little credibility.
Greenpeace state that this logo is not as robust as FSC and they “fail to distinguish between responsible and irresponsible forest management” (http://m.greenpeace.org/international/en/mid/campaigns/forests/solutions/alternatives-to-forest-destruc/Weaker-Certification-Schemes/). This article also states that FSC has been setting the bar high for ecologically and socially responsible forest management ever since its establishment in 1994 and it has been “setting the trend” for particularly PEFC to follow.
In China there is concern about the transparency with PEFC brand, so much so that it could be used against forests and putting them at more risk!!!
Most brands in the major supermarkets have either logo on them but I encourage everyone to stick to FSC logo’d products rather than PEFC.
Pete’s rating for FSC logo Branded Toilet paper:
Rated on:
Price (Cheap, Fair or Exy)
Comfort level (Below Par, Okay, Good)
Home Brand: Cheap, Below Par (top left) Woolworth Select: Cheap, Okay (top right)
Icare: Fair, Okay (middle left) Safe: Fair, Good (middle right)

WINNER (Pete’s choice): SAFE is my choice. Not too expensive but still comfortable.
My Second choice would be Cottonelle Bamboo. Purely because its made bamboo (grass) rather than from trees
